Liverpool plan to make a £12m bid for Basel winger Mohamed Salah after manager Brendan Rodgers made a personal check on the 21-year-old Egypt international, but the Swiss club are likely to demand £20m for him in January.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are in the running for Basel winger.

Salah won the African confederation’s Most Promising African Talent award last year and has attracted attention from Bundesliga clubs as well as Italian giants Inter despite a reported price tag of around £10million.

He featured for Egypt during the London 2012 Olympics scoring in every group match including a goal against Brazil at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as Egypt finished second in Group C. They lost 3-0 in the quarter finals to Japan.

Salah caught FC Basel’s eye after the Swiss side set up a friendly with Egypt’s U23 team. Salah scored two goals despite only featuring in the second-half and was invited to train with Basel soon after before signing a month later in April 2012.

The winger made his debut for Egypt at just 19 years of age in 2011.
