Leopards striker Rudi Ndey undergoes spinal surgery

Leopards striker Rudi Bhebey-Ndey has undergone successful surgery after severely injuring his spinal column in Sunday’s match with Zamalek in the African Confederation Cup.

“Ndey’s surgery succeeded. He was in a very bad condition when he arrived at El-Tagammo El-Khames Air Defence Hospital,” Dr Salah Abdel-Khalek, who treated the player, told an Egyptian radio station on Monday morning.

The 29-year-old fell heavily on the top of his head following a forceful tackle by Zamalek goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy.

“He arrived with serious damage to his spinal column between his fifth and sixth vertebra, a blow to the spinal cord, breathing difficulties and brain bleeding, but the surgery was successful,” the neurosurgeon explained.

“We will contact his doctors in Congo. I cannot reassure you about his condition yet, and he will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for two days, where he is currently using a ventilator,” Abdel-Khalek added.

From their side, Zamalek board, under leadership of Chairman Mortada Mansour, have decided to cover all his medical expenses. Congolese embassy in Cairo thanked Zamalek for their gesture.

“CAF wishes a speedy recovery for Rudi Ndey after his injury against Zamalek at #CAFCC,” the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated though their official account Monday.

Rudi Guelor Bhebey-Ndey is a striker who has also played for other Congolese teams, including Etoile du Congo, Diables Noirs, and Cara. He is also a key player for his national team.
