Mohamed Ihab gave Egypt its second weightlifting medal on Wednesday after clinching bronze in the men’s 77kg event at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old totalled 361kg despite two failed attempts in the snatch and clean and jerk, finishing behind gold medalist Nijat Rahimov of Kazakhstan and China’s silver medalist Lu Xiaojun, who both set a world and Olympic record after totalling 379kg.

Ihab became the second Egyptian to stand on the podium in a few hours after female weightlifter Sara Samir, 18, also won the bronze medal in the 69kg event.

He won the silver medal at the World Championships in Almaty 2014 in the 69kg event.

A year later he moved up to the 77kg category and managed to win the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships held in Houston, totalling 363kg.
