Jorvan Vieira resigns as Ismaily exit Arab Championship

Ismaily became the third Egyptian side to exit the Arab Zayed Cup at the last-16 stage after suffering a 4-2 shootout defeat by Morocco’s Raja in Casablanca after a 0-0 aggregate draw on Tuesday.

The Dervishes managed to hold Confederation Cup winners Raja to a 0-0 stalemate, the same result of the first leg, but some poor spot-kicks let them down in the shootout.

They wasted two efforts, including a tame one from skipper Hosni Abd-Rabou which was easily saved by the keeper.

Ismaily followed Cairo giants Ahly and Zamalek to the exit door.

Ahly bowed out after losing to UAE side Al-Wasl on the away-goal rule following a 3-3 aggregate draw while Zamalek lost on penalties to fellow Egyptian club Ittihad after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

Ismaily’s Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira has officially resigned from his post after the club’s exit from the Arab Championship.

“The board accepted the resignation of Vieira,” reads a statement on the club’s official site.

“Vieira had asked to leave his post a while ago, so the board had already searched for an excellent alternative,” the statement explained.

“After choosing between some coaches, the board selected an experienced foreign coach to take charge in the coming period. The new coach will arrive during the coming few days,” the coastal club concluded without revealing the new tactician’s identity.

Earlier in October, the 65-year-old Vieira took charge of Ismaily after the departure of Algerian Kheireddine Madoui following a string of poor results.

Under the guidance of the former Zamalek and Smouha manager Vieira, Ismaily played 11 matches; winning five times and losing three. The coach also guided the team to reach the African Champions league round of 32.

Ismaily are currently at the bottom of the Egyptian Premier League table with 13 points from 13 games, 22 behind leaders Zamalek.
