LIVERPOOL out to sign RB Leipzig star THIS SUMMER

RB Leipzig star Timo Werner has been long linked with a move to Liverpool but a deal has failed to materialize so far. He could still head to Liverpool this summer after RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff claimed the Germany international would prefer a move to Anfield rather than Bayern Munich.

Timo Werner, 23, scored 16 goals and supplied seven assists in 30 games in the Bundesliga in the 2018-19 season. He has been a star at Leipzig since moving from Stuttgart in 2016, netting 62 goals in 112 games in all competitions.

However, the 23-year-old has just 12 months left on his deal at the Red Bull Arena and is yet to agree on an extension. Werner looks set for an exit at the end of this season and Liverpool, without any second thoughts, must make a move for him in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s men pushed Manchester City to the final day in the title race, eventually losing out by one point. It was a grueling campaign for the Reds, but they’ll need to pick themselves up quickly and prepare for the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur next month.

Irrespective of the outcome of the Champions League final, Klopp needs to spend in the transfer market to improve his squad in a bid to overhaul Premier League champions Manchester City next campaign. He must focus on bolstering his forward department, as once again Liverpool have been heavily reliant on their front three—Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Firmino, Mane and Salah have scored plenty of goals for the Merseysiders, but the former has struggled with injury problems in the final months of the campaign, leaving Klopp to rely upon the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi. And while Origi has scored crucial goals to bail Liverpool out on a few occasions, there is a clear need of a prolific forward in the squad.

Werner could exactly be the kind of player the Reds would love to have next season. Regarded as one of the best young strikers in Europe, the German’s attacking intelligence and eye for goal have helped propel RB Leipzig to greater heights in the last couple of seasons in the Bundesliga.
