Liverpool will be desperately keen to extend their 100% record in the Premier League this weekend as they clash with great rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Previously, Reds fans have been used to heading to Manchester with slight dread at the prospect but that could not be more different this time around as Jurgen Klopp’s men aim to profit from their opponents’ awful start to the season.

Manchester United

The pressure is only cranking up on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, and it does not look like their fortunes are going to improve against Liverpool. The Red Devils languish down in 12th position in the Premier League table. They have only won two games in the league all season long and are currently on a run of only one win in their last five matches in all competitions and that came via a penalty shootout against League One outfit Rochdale. The outlook got even worse in their last league game as they fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened outfit Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

One distinct aspect that Solskjaer’s troops have been struggling with throughout the season is their ability to find the net. Only once so far this season have the team managed to score more than once in a match and that was in the 4-0 thumping of Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

United’s luck concerning injuries only seems to be worsening as the season progresses. Their stricken list appears to be the longest in the entire league with Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Jesse Lingard, Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones already all ruled out. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Greenwood are all doubts ahead of the game. Elsewhere, key players Paul Pogba and David De Gea are both unlikely to feature.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s troops certainly went close to losing their 100% record in the Premier League last time out against Leicester City. Taking the lead through Sadio Mane’s strike, they were soon pinned back by James Maddison’s equaliser. Just as it looked like they were going to be held to a draw, the Reds were awarded a late penalty which James Milner successfully converted. That all means that Liverpool sit eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table, a huge gap albeit at this early stage.

Whilst their wicked front-line justifiably grabs all of the headlines the majority of the time, the Reds’ defence has also been excellent this season. Klopp’s men currently boast the second best defence in the top-four leagues of English football having only conceded six goals so far in the league this campaign. Considering they come up against a Manchester United side who really are failing to threaten, then they will be confident to extend that excellent record this weekend.

Klopp could have some considerable injury boosts this weekend. Firstly, goalkeeper Alisson Becker looks set to return having been ruled out since the opening weekend. However, he has quite the task to oust Adrian who has been stellar as no. 1. Elsewhere, Mo Salah should be fine to play after picking up a problem in the recent win against Leicester. Meanwhile, Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri could also return to action.
