Gomaa refuses to play Orlando Pirates while fasting | CAF Champions League

Egypt and Ahly defender Wael Gomaa announced that the team will not play South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the second match of the group stage while they are fasting, as it will affect the players’ performance in the game.

“It’s difficult to play a game while you are fasting,” Gomaa told the club’s official website on Sunday.

Ahly, the seven-time African champions, have officially asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the Orlando Pirates game for five days, to be played on 9 August instead of 4 August, in order to give them a chance to find a host stadium.  |

Ahly and Zamalek players, who were fasting during the 15th day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, suffered while playing their CAF Champions League group stage opener on Wednesday.

Cairo rivals Ahly and Zamalek shared honors in a dour African Champions League clash when they drew 1-1 in the group stage on 23 July.
