Al Ahly SC are expected to coast to a win that would hand them the league crown with seven matches to spare, a feat they only achieved in their incredible 2004/2005 title-winning season.

A victory would cap another memorable campaign for Ahly, who will secure a fifth consecutive triumph and their 42nd overall, having led the table from the first day without any real competition on top.

Swiss coach Rene Weiler, who reports suggesting might leave when the season ends, will deliver his first major title after quickly winning over the team’s fans, with Ahly likely to do their best to keep him at the helm next season.

Should Ahly beat Ittihad, they will gain an unassailable 22-point lead over second-placed Zamalek with seven matches left. They can then try and beat some of their own records, including surpassing a point tally of 88 and scoring more than 75 goals a season.

But what would be more important is shifting their focus to winning the Champions League, a competition which has eluded them since they won the last of their record eight titles in 2013.

Winning the domestic league so early would allow Weiler to rest his key regulars before Ahly meet Morocco’s Wydad in a mouthwatering two-legged semi-final next month.

Ahly have won five straight games since losing 3-1 to arch-rivals Zamalek, their only defeat this season, last month and Ittihad are unlikely to halt that run. The Alexandria-based club lie fifth in the table with 36 points from 25 matches.
