In-form Aston Villa tasted defeat for the first time this season in mid-week with a narrow 1-0 reverse at home to Stoke City in the Carabao Cup, to end their impressive early five-match winning streak.

Having rested a whole host of his first-choice players against the Potters, Dean Smith made his priorities clear on Thursday, and the Villa boss probably won’t lose any sleep over this team’s fourth-round exit.

Back-to-back Premier League victories and clean sheets have left Villa sitting pretty in 4th spot ahead of the weekend’s action, though a meeting with a formidable Liverpool outfit threatens to blot the Villains’ copybook for the first time.

Liverpool have come galloping out of the traps in typically emphatic style this season, and their Carabao Cup exit to Arsenal in mid-week with a weakened team will do little to knock them out of their stride.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have a perfect nine points from nine after three games, and after they came through an unexpectedly tricky opening test against Leeds, Liverpool produced a pair of dominant statement performances in wins over Chelsea and Arsenal.

While their rivals continue to flounder, Liverpool already look like a smoothly running winning machine, and the Merseysiders will expect to gather three more points on Sunday.

Aston Villa injuries and team news
Wesley and Bjorn Engels remain in the treatment room for Villa, though Dean Smith’s squad is fit and fresh beyond that injury-stricken pair.

Ross Barkley could be in line for an Aston Villa debut having joined for the season on loan from Chelsea.

Liverpool injuries and team news
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Joel Matip and Konstantinos Tsimakas are all still sidelined for Liverpool, while Thiago is still self-isolating having tested positive for COVID-19.

Jordan Henderson is working his way back to fitness, though he remains a doubt this weekend.
