Highlights: Egypt 2-2 Ghana | 2023 AFCON

Egypt managed to secure a 2-2 draw against Ghana in a Nations Cup Group B match, coming from behind twice in the process.

Mohammed Kudus netted both goals for Ghana, but defensive lapses from the “Black Stars” allowed Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed to equalize twice. Despite the setback, Egypt now holds the second spot in Group B with two points, trailing Cape Verde by just one point.

The Pharaohs faced adversity early in the match, especially when Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool ace, had to exit the field due to a left thigh injury just before halftime. Despite this setback, Ghana’s lead was short-lived, as Kudus capitalized with a powerful shot from outside the area during first-half injury time.

The match also saw the return of Kudus, who had recovered from a hamstring injury. In the second half, he had another scoring opportunity, while Egypt had a goal from Mohamed Abdel-Moneam disallowed for offside after a VAR review. As a result of the 2-2 draw, Egypt remains in contention in Group B, while Ghana languishes at the bottom with just one point, on par with Mozambique.

In the 69th minute, Marmoush leveled the score by seizing on a backpass mistake from Iñaki Williams. However, Kudus promptly retaliated, unleashing a shot that took a slight deflection off Abdel-Moneam and found the back of the net.

In the 72nd minute, another defensive lapse, this time by Osman Bukari, provided the opportunity for Mostafa Mohamed to equalize for Egypt. The goal was assisted by second-half substitute Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet,’ who had a significant impact on the game.

Looking ahead to their next matches on Monday, Egypt is set to face Cape Verde, while Ghana will take on Mozambique.

As the game reached its conclusion, midfielder Emam Ashour nearly secured victory for the Pharaohs, but his curling attempt was expertly saved by Ghana keeper Ofori.
