Zamalek crowned 2020-21 Egyptian Premier League champions – Report

Zamalek won their 13th Egyptian Premier League title.

Zamalek SC have been crowned 2020-21 Egyptian Premier League champions after a convincing 2-0 win against El Entag.

The White Knights did not need to look at the result of their closest rivals, Al Ahly’s game in El Gouna to know that they are the champions, despite the fact that Al Ahly were held to a 3-3 draw in the last minute against El Gouna.

Zamalek had a fantastic run in the competition and they had a strong finish with eight straight wins to come from behind and capture the title.

Zamalek won their third title under their French manager, Patrice Carteron who reunited with the club this season after a short spell in Saudi Arabia.

The White Knights won the league title after reaching 79 points from 24 victories and seven draws. They only lost two games in their journey to win the title, the first loss was against Ghazl El Mahalla and the last one was against Al Ahly in the derby.

Zamalek have a chance to finish the league with a record tally of points if they managed to avoid a defeat in the last round against National Bank SC.

The decision of coach Patrice Carteron to leave Saudi Arabia’s Al-Taawoun in March for Cairo certainly looks to have been vindicated.

“I am very happy for our supporters and for the club,” said the Frenchman, the first from his country to win the title with Zamalek. “It’s a great honor to win the league title in Egypt. We made a remarkable finish winning eight consecutive matches. We finished strong.”

“It’s a very special season for me, especially that the board put its confidence in me after returning. We managed to stabilize the team, improve and overcome our rival,” he said.
