SKY NEWS REPORTS:

Mohamed Salah is the latest FC Basel starlet to emerge as a target for some of Europe’s top clubs, and we check on the African wing wizard.

Salah has produced man-of-the-match displays for Basel in each of their wins over Chelsea in this season’s UEFA Champions League, which has projected him onto the radar of a host of Europe’s top clubs.

He was picked up early on by El-Mokawloon, where he shone at youth level and he was promoted to the first-team to make his debut aged just 16, while at this time he was also called up to Egypt’s youth set-up.

It did not take him long to become a first-team regular and it was soon after that he started attracting interest from Europe.

Then a tragedy played into the hands of Salah’s suitors, with the Port Said Stadium disaster which saw the Egyptian Premier League season cancelled.

After the disaster, Basel organised a game against Egypt’s Olympic team ahead of the 2012 games. It gave the Swiss a chance to keep a close eye on some players – with Salah their main point of interest.

Salah performed well as a second-half substitute and scored twice to help his side to a 4-3 win. On the back of that, Basel invited him to stay for a trial spell and without any club football to return he was able to accept the invite.

A month later Basel confirmed the permanent signing of Salah, but his contract was not able to start until the summer as the transfer window was closed.

In the summer of 2012, Salah was named Africa’s most promising talent of the year.

He made his debut in the Champions League clash with Molde and in his first season he helped Basel claim the league title as he established himself in the first team.

After his outstanding maiden campaign, his form has continued into this season, which has seen him score against Chelsea in both games this season.

Salah is now being strongly tipped for a move to England and looks well suited to the Premier League.

Full of running, Salah can play on either flank. Full of pace, he is a huge danger in the final third and loves beating a full-back.

The fact that he looks a fully-equipped English-style winger is no doubt the reason a clutch of Premier League clubs are reported to be chasing him.

The scout says…

Tottenham and Liverpool are understood to be closely tracking Salah and a move in January may not be a huge surprise.

His performances in Europe show that he is probably ready to make the move, and he is certainly one to keep an eye on in the new year.
