Senegal wants Hervé Renard

Senegal football federation (FSF) says plans are underway to open talks with Zambia coach Hervé Renard, 43, to succeed Amara Traore who was fired last week in the wake of the Teranga Lions’ debacle at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The FSF chief Augustin Senghor arrived in Gabon on Thursday to attend the 34th Caf ordinary general assembly scheduled for the weekend and would likely establish links with the Frenchman, according a source at the body, who spoke to SuperSport.com from Dakar.

Senegal officials are in quest of an experienced coach with knowledge of African football to continue from where Traore stopped.

Renard, who recently managed Algerian club USM Alger, is drawing wide approval at the FSF, but it is still unclear if the coach would quit the Zambia team after the tournament.

Aliou Cissé has been named as interim coach but many at the FSF consider the former captain of the team too inexperienced to realise laid down objectives.

Deemed among the top favourites of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal quickly crashed out in the group stage without winning a single match.

Qatari club Al-Gharafa coach Bruno Metsu, who handled Senegal from 2000 to 2002, declared on Friday that he was interested in coaching the squad anew if given the opportunity.

The Senegal FA is yet to respond to the Frenchman, who led one of the country’s best generations of footballers to the final of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and the Fifa World Cup held in Japan and South Korea that same year.
