Substitute Silvestre Varela grabbed a Euro lifeline for Portugal last night – to the huge relief of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Varela, introduced in the 84th minute, struck a sensational winner three minutes from time.

It kept alive Portugal’s hopes of qualifying for the last eight following their opening defeat to Germany.
