Profile
Wael Gomaa is widely regarded as of the best defenders in African football. Indeed, he was selected as one of the continent’s best XI players by the African Football Confederation (CAF) between 2006 and 2008. A fierce marker undeterred by facing the likes of African superstars Didier Drogba or Samuel Eto’o, Gomaa took part at the 2002 and 2004 editions of the CAF African Cup of Nations as well as playing every minute of the Pharaohs’ continental triumphs in 2006 and 2008.Having started his career with Ghazl Al-Mehalla, he has since turned out only for Egyptian giants Al Ahly – barring a short spell in Qatar with Al Siliya. Indeed, despite reported interest from a succession of European clubs, Al Ahly have done everything in their power to ensure their defensive stalwart stays in Cairo.
