2009 Confederations Cup Controversy
Amr Adeeb was the central figure in a huge controversy surrounding the Egyptian Football team’s performance in the Fifa 2009 Confederations Cup. On his show, Amr Adeeb presented several UK and South African Tabloids that claimed that 5 players of the Egyptian Team hired hookers before their crucial clash with the U.S, which ended in a shocking defeat to the Pharaohs. Amr’s allegations coupled with his demeaning attitude caused a storm among the Egyptian players, who called the show live to refute the allegations. Amr was very condescending when the players called, to the degree that the Egyptian Coach cursed him on the air. The fall out continued, when Mohamaed Abotrika, Egypt’s star player, threatened to quit international football unless Adeeb apologizes.
After further investigation, the tabloids had no evidence and Adeeb was forced to apologize to the Egyptian players the very next day on his show. His apology centered around his lack of diligence in making sure the story was factual before airing it live to millions of viewers. That said, Adeeb did apologize for his remarks and attitude, but insisted that he had no regrets of bringing the story to the attention of his viewers, citing that he is a journalist and his acts were totally within the realm of his job duties and responsibilities.
Most of Amr’s adoring fan base forgave him and let the issue go, though he gained many new-found critics.
