Egypt & Zamalek Leagend Ibrahim Youssef dies at 54

Ibrahim Youssef, who is widely regarded as one of Egypt and Zamalek’s best-ever defenders, has died at the age of 54 due to a circulatory collapse.

The towering defender was one of Egypt’s most prominent stars in the late 1970s and 1980s.

An elegant sweeper in his playing days, Youssef has been dubbed “the gazelle” for his agility and astuteness.

He helped Zamalek win the African Cup, the old version of the elite Champions League, twice in 1984 and 1986. He also won the Egyptian Premier League with his boyhood club in 1984 and the Egypt Cup in 1979.

On the international level, Youssf was part of the Egypt squad that played in the 1984 African Cup of Nations and the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the same year.

He was named as Africa’s second-best footballer in 1984 and third best one year later by France Football magazine, a coveted prize that was later replaced with an official award given by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
