Egypt’s ACN hopes are virtually over after they failed to beat South Africa in a goalless draw at Cairos Military Academy Stadium on Sunday.
The draw places Bafana on top of the group with eight points after four matches, requiring one win in the remaining two fixtures to ensure qualification into the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Pharaohs barely troubled South Africas defense in a night to forget to edge very close to the unthinkable prospect of missing out on a tournament they won a record seven times, including the last three editions in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Egypt have never failed to reach the biennial tournament after playing in the qualifiers. The few occasions in which they were absent were down to political circumstances rather than footballing reasons.
This could be the last match of Coach Hassan Shehata, who has led Egypt to unprecedented success on the continental level since he took over at the national team in late 2004.
