The brawl erupted right after the final whistle as Egypt missed out on winning their sixth football gold medal at the Military Games, thanks to a first-half goal from Algeria’s Awad Sayed.
Television cameras caught Egypt forward Ahmed Eid, who is widely criticized by local media for his fiery temper which dearly cost him over the past few years, chasing an Algerian player before catching him with a kung fu-style kick.
The vicious attack led to a free-for-all, with players from both sides aiming punches and kicks at each other in a scene reminiscent of the sort of violence which blighted many of the matches between Egypt and Algeria’s senior teams over the past 30 years.
The North African rivals played two bad-tempered World Cup qualifying games in late 2009 which ignited a diplomatic row between the two countries.
Egyptian Premier League winners Ahly are due to host Algerian outfit Moloudia Alger in a CAF Champions League clash in Cairo on 12 August.
