One of Africa’s four flag bearers Egypt will battle Brazil in Friday’s opening match of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Kick-off time: 10pm ET (New York/Montreal Time) / 4am Egypt Time.
A lot is expected of Africa in Colombia after Ghana made history by becoming the first team from the Continent to win the Junior World Cup two years ago, incidentally in Egypt.
The Young Pharaohs finished third at the recent African Youth Championship in South Africa after war-torn Libya could not host the biennial tournament in April.
Their best outing at the World cup was achieved in 2001 when they finished third. They reached the last 16 when they hosted the competition two years ago, losing 2-0 to Costa Rica.
Egypt prepared for the U20 World Cup in Portugal, where they played several warm-up matches. They first drew 0-0 with Portugal before they were forced by the home side to a 2-2 draw in the second game.
