Sudan are nursing slim hopes of progressing from Group B as they prepare to face Burkino Faso in the African Nations Cup on Monday
Sudan scored their first goals in the competition in 36 years to come from behind twice and earn a 2-2 draw with Angola last time out – also collecting their first point since 1976.
The result means a victory, combined with an Angola defeat to Ivory Coast, could see Sudan sneak through as it would come down to goal difference.
Sudan coach Mohamed Abdalla, who has vague memories of his country winning this tournament back in 1970 when he was 16, revealed after the Angola match that he had told his side to go for broke in the remaining games, as there was no way through without breaking their goal duck.
“I’m trying to minimise the small mistakes of our inexperienced defenders playing against high-quality strikers,” he said.
“I think we are improving. To survive in this competition you have to win, so we played more offensive.”
