The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) is studying whether to cancel a friendly tournament scheduled to replace the Premier League and only hold the Egypt Cup.
All football competitions were suspended on 1 February when 74 fans were killed at a match between Masry and Ahly in Port Said. The former EFA board under Samir Zaher was replaced by a new board led by Anwar Saleh.
On 10 March, Saleh announced the league season would be cancelled and a friendly tournament held instead. However, sources inside the association confirmed that “there will be no championship this season except the cup.”
The association is studying cancelling the tournament and applying a new system for the cup that would allow all clubs to compensate for their losses, EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed said.
