Mohamed Zidan has turned down a permanent contract at Mainz after his six-month loan had finished.
Mainz GM Christian Heidel revealed that the club were forced to end talks with the 30-year-old after failing to convince him with a new deal.
“We had a long conversation, but he was not willing to accept our offer,” Heidel was quoted by German media.
The Mainz official also added that the disagreement was because of the contract length rather than wages.
Zidan, who is now a free agent after his contract with parent club Borussia Dortmund had ended, excelled with Mainz during his short-term stint that started in the winter break.
He played a major role in keeping Thomas Tuchel’s side in the top flight thanks to his seven goals in the second half of the Bundesliga season.
