Abou-Treika Under Fire
Al Ahly’s playmaker says he respects Egypts institutions after local reports said he had verbally abused an Egyptian army officer.
Ahly and Egypt stalwart Mohamed Abou-Treika has denied verbally abusing an Egyptian army officer upon the teams arrival in Cairo following an African Champions League game in Congo.
Local reports said the veteran playmaker, who is known for being Islamist-leaning, had yelled at the officer who was responsible of securing the team bus, telling him: Are you bringing the army which is killing the people to secure us?
The Red Devils claimed a precious 1-0 victory at Congos AC Leopards to revive their hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-final as they bid for a second consecutive continental title.
“I fully respect all the country’s institutions, including the army,” Abou-Treika told the club’s official website on Tuesday.
“These are just rumors and lies that will not affect my concentration with Ahly and the national team,” he added.
Cairo giants Ahly echoed Abou-Treikas sentiment, stressing that all players are only concentrated on football not politics.
Abou-Treika, considered as one of the best players in Egypt’s history, has refrained from commenting on headline-grabbing political issues since the army overthrew Mohamed Morsi, the countrys first freely elected leader.
