2014 World Cup qualifiers: Cape Verde shock Tunisia

Cape Verde beat Tunisia 2-0 to reach the play-off stage in the race for Brazil 2014.

The two goals were recorded early on in the first half as fans applauded Platini and Heldon at the 29th and 42nd minutes respectively.

The shock winners of today’s encounter are now top of Group B with 12 points as Tunisia is a point short.

Two goals in the first half by Cape Verde dented Tunisia’s chances of making it to the third and final round of qualifiers.

Hopeful

Platini opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Heldon added a second three minutes to the break for the visitors to lead the Carthage Eagles at the break.

A spirited run by the host in the second half resulted in naught as they dropped to second in the log to miss out on the next phase.

Heading to the game, Tunisia topped the four-team Group ‘B’ with 11 points, two points clear of the hopeful Cape Verde.

Respectably

A draw would have seen them through but as things turned out, the visiting Nation, who earlier in the year qualified for the Africa Cup o Nations for the first time ever after edging out Cameroon, ran away with their destiny.

Cape Verde tops the log with 12 points and now join Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria and Egypt in the final round of qualifiers.

In another Group ‘B’ tie played on Saturday Sierra Leone ended the qualifiers respectably with a narrow 3-2 win over Equatorial Guinea.
