Etoile du Sahel 1-1 Al Ahly | Match Video Review

Ahly got a precious point on Sunday when they held Etoile du Sahel to a 1-1 draw in the second matchday of the Confederation Cup quarters.

It was Ahly’s first positive away result in their African campaign, as they have lost all their away games this season.

Sunday’s draw allowed Ahly to cement their position at the top of the group with four points, two ahead of second-placed Etoile du Sahel.

Ahly started the game with a defensive strategy that allowed the hosts to dominate most of the first half — but without a real threat.

Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring for the hosts five minutes before the break.

A defensive lapse from Ahly defenders Ahmed Fathi and Saad Samir allowed Bounedjah to receive a nice cross from Falhi and to score from close range.

Etoile intensified their attacks at the start of the second half and wasted two precious opportunities, but Ahly’s striker Amr Gamal stunned the hosts on the 59th minute by scoring the equaliser — the first and sole attempt from Ahly in the game.

Gamal received a nice pass from substitute Ahmed Shoukri, who replaced injured Mohamed ‘Gedo’ Nagy to score from close range.

Etoile were close to scoring the second goal several times, especially in the last five minutes, but Bounedjah’s nice header was denied by the bar and Marouane Taj’s shot went out.
