Egypt keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy will now be sidelined for up to six weeks following the injury he picked up in the 1-0 home defeat to Senegal in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this week.
While jumping to collect the ball from a free kick by the visitors, the Zamalek keeper looked to have aggravated an ankle problem, eventually allowing Stoke City striker Mame Biram Diouf to head home the winner early in the game.
The 23-year-old guardian, who was initially doubtful for the crucial home qualifier after limping off during Zamalek’s league game against Haras El-Hodoud days before, had to call for the medical staff to stretcher him off leaving the pitch after just eight minutes.
“I’ll be out for between four and six weeks with an inflamed ankle,” the highly rated keeper told reporters on Friday.
El-Shennawy will now miss some crucial fixtures for Zamalek in the league, where they will be taking on Masry, Ismaily and ENPPI during the next few weeks.
Zamalek have already requested that the Egyptian FA incur all expenses related to El-Shennawy’s treatment after the national team’s management came under immense criticism for fielding the unfit goalie against Senegal.
