Ahly will be eyeing a much-needed lift when they face ASEC Mimosas in an otherwise meaningless African Champions League game on Wednesday.

A 2-2 draw at home to Zambia’s ZESCO United in their previous game earlier this month left Ahly with almost no chance to advance to the semis and their elimination was confirmed when Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca defeated ASEC 2-1 with a last-gasp goal a few days later.

Ahly’s poor Champions League group-stage campaign saw them secure only win in five matches, losing twice and drawing in as many games to lose the chance of pursuing a record-extending ninth title.

They will miss injured playmaker Abdallah El-Saied while winger Walid Soliman is doubtful after being hurt in the cup final loss to Zamalek.

Regular central defenders Rami Rabia and Ahmed Hegazy are also out, increasing the woes of a porous backline.

Ahly conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 to ASEC in their home clash in June.
