Ahmad of Madagascar has pulled off a stunning upset on Thursday as he ousted long-serving Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Issa Hayatou from his post by winning an election at the organisation’s congress in Ethiopia.

The 57-year-old former government minister, who goes by just a single name, won 34-20 in the poll for the CAF presidency.

It brings a surprise end to the 29-year tenure of the 70-year-old from Cameroon.

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) member Hazem El-Hawari has stated that the end of Issa Hayatou’s term as head of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) could be good for Egypt.

“[New association head Ahmad] Ahmad is a good person, and we are expecting good management from him,” El-Hawari told Filgoal minutes after the election results were announced Thursday.

“Maybe Ahmed’s win is better for Egyptian football, especially after the recent complications with Hayatou,” El-Hawari added.

Egypt’s general prosecution referred Hayatou on Monday to the country’s Economic Court on charges of violating Egypt’s Competition Law in selling broadcast and sponsoring rights to French company Lagardère Sports for 20 years.
