After winning the domestic league title with four matches to spare, Ahly will face Smouha on Friday with an eye on their upcoming champions League clash against Wydad Casablanca on Tuesday.
Group leaders Ahly will be heading to Morocco on Tuesday with the aim of securing a positive result in the away game to keep their place at the top of the group.
It is therefore likely that coach Hossam El-Badry will sideline some of his stars, especially the international players, from Smouha’s clash in order to take some rest before the African clash.
Keeper Sherif Ekrami, defenders Ahmed Hegazi and Ahmed Fathi, and midfielder Abdallah El-Saed all started against Tunisia in a Nations Cup qualifier.
The players appeared exhausted and out of form, especially Abdallah El-Saed, who was criticised by Pharaohs coach Hector Cuper after the game.
Ahly’s boss El-Badry will be eager to give a chance to some substitute players before making a decision concerning their fate with the team in the next season.
Meanwhile, fifth-placed Smouha are looking for a win against Ahly to advance to the fourth place to secure an African birth in the next season.
Smouha are three points off fourth-placed Masri, who have 54 points.
