West Brom & Hull City fighting over Ahly’s defender Ahmed Hegazy

The centre-back has shone for Cairo giants Al Ahly, inspiring them to win a second consecutive league title.

Hegazy also helped Egypt reach the African Cup of Nations final in February, and was named in the team of the tournament.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis and new Hull chief Leonid Slutsky have both now checked on the 26-year-old as they shape their squads for the new season.

Hegazy began his career with hometown club Ismaily, but had a three-year spell in Italy with Fiorentina and played on loan for Perugia before returning home to join Ahly in 2015.

Under contract until 2020, he is valued at £6million and nicknamed the “Nesta of the Pyramids” – thanks to a similar playing style to Italian ace Alessandro Nesta.

Hawthorns scouts watched the defender in Ahly’s African Champions League clash with Wydad Casablanca two weeks ago.

Meanwhile Russian Slutsky is understood to have spied on Hegazy during his club’s return fixture against Moroccans Wydad earlier this week.

Hull’s squad includes Hegazy’s national teammate Ahmed Elmohamady.
