Montenegrin coach Nebojsa Jovovic was given another chance to save his job as Zamalek seek to return to winning ways against Ittihad of Alexandria in Wednesday’s Egyptian Premier League game.
Zamalek’s outspoken chairman Mortada originally said Jovovic had stepped down following the team’s late 1-0 defeat by Ismaily on Thursday which extended their winless league run to three matches.
However, the club later said Jovovic would lead Zamalek against Ittihad amid reports the White Knights could not afford paying him $74,000 for terminating his contract.
“Nebojsa will continue to lead Zamalek,” said football director Ismaily Youssef without further elaborating.
Zamalek’s poor run cast doubts over their ability to challenge perennial Cairo rivals Ahly for the title, having lost three matches and drawn four in their opening 12 league matches under Jovovic, who took over little less than two weeks before the competition got underway.
They lie fifth in the table with 19 points, 12 behind leaders Ismaily who played two matches more.
Ittihad, who are 14th in the 18-team table on 13 points, will be hoping the arrival of Spanish coach Juan Maqueda will turn around their fortunes.
