The Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup will be back to life when Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia host Egypt’s Zamalek in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday.
Zamalek will feature in the game after winning the Egypt Cup title last season while Al-Hilal are the reigning champions of the Saudi league.
Saturday’s game will be the third Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup since the competition was inaugurated in 2001. It was also held in 2003, with Zamalek – then the cup champions – beating Jeddah-based club Ittihad on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Zamalek’s Swiss manager Christian Gross said his side will start the game with a very strong formation and that they will do their best to win the title “to make the fans happy.”
“Al-Hilal are now a lot different from the team I faced when I was coach for [Saudi Arbaia’s] Al-Ahli. They now have about 8 players who are on a top technical level,” Gross told a news conference in Riyadh on Friday.
Another Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup will take place next month in Cairo but Saudi Arabia’s Ittihad have yet to learn who they will face, given doubts over the participation of Egyptian league champions Ahly.
