Gary Neville reacts to Jose Mourinho being sacked by Manchester United | VIDEO
Gary Neville has suggested the writing was on the wall for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United when the club failed to fully back him in the summer transfer window.
Mourinho’s sacking was confirmed on Tuesday morning following the club’s disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.
United trail top-flight leaders Liverpool by 19 points and are 11 points off the top four after Sunday’s humbling at Anfield.
Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna took training on Tuesday and will do the same on Wednesday, with the club hopeful of appointing an interim manager until the end of the season before the weekend.
Mourinho was desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer but Ed Woodward vetoed a number of his top transfer targets and Neville believes that was a sign that the club no longer had faith in the Portuguese.
“The moment earlier on in the season where it was clear the board decided they didn’t want to back a couple of Jose Mourinho’s signings. To be honest, at that point, you’re finished as a manager,” Neville told Sky Sports.
