Huddersfield winger Ramadan Sobhi will Join Al Ahly in January

It seems that Ramadan Sobhi could be on his way back to Egypt to rejoin the club that sold him to Stoke City in the summer of 2016.

Egyptian Premier League champions Al Ahly have announced they are in “ongoing negotiations” with the Huddersfield Town winger to re-sign him during the January transfer window.

It is not clear whether they are talking about a loan or a permanent deal, or whether Huddersfield themselves are involved in the talks. He is just a few months in to a three-year contract with the Yorkshire club.

Sobhi quit Stoke in the summer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, but he has failed to establish himself in a struggling Huddersfield team, making just four top-flight appearances and all from the bench.

The Al Ahly statement said: “The club management confirms that negotiations with Huddersfield winger Ramadan Sobhi is still ongoing and in advanced stage. A deal will be officially announced once it’s definitely sealed.”

The 21-year-old arrived at Stoke for a fee in the region of £5m with a big reputation as the wonderkid of Egyptian football, and went on to score three goals in 41 appearances for the club over two seasons.

Ahly have been very active in the January market in an attempt to inject some life into their under-achieving squad, signing winger Mohamed Mahmoud from Wadi Degla, left-back Mahmoud Wahid from Maqassa, and winger Geraldo da Costa from Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto.

The club also announced this month the appointment of Uruguayan tactician Martin Lasarte to lead the team.

Ahly are currently seventh in the Egyptian league table with 23 points from 11 games, 12 points adrift of leaders Zamalek who have played three more games.
