With the Egyptian Premier League title looking firmly in the bag, Ahly can now turn their attention to a domestic club record as they face Talae El-Geish on Monday.
Ahly survived a scare on Monday by coming from behind to snatch a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Pyramids, maintaining a perfect run which saw them win their opening 13 matches, conceding only three goals.
They are seven points ahead of nearest challengers Arab Contractors, who played three games more, and are just four wins short of equaling a club record of 17 consecutive victories that they set in the 2004/05 season under iconic Portuguese boss Manuel Jose.
They can also look ahead to a busy month, during which they will meet arch rivals Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup on 20 February before facing them again in the league four days later.
They will also play South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in a crunch two-legged clash in the African Champions League quarter-final at the end of the month.
“Everyone is aware of the importance of this month’s matches on the domestic and continental fronts, but we are taking it one game at a time,” football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz said on Ahly’s official website.
“We have a very important match against Sundowns at the end of the month but we must think first about our league matches against El-Geish, Masry and Zamalek.”
El-Geish are unlikely to pose a serious threat to Ahly as they sit 14th in the 18-team table with 15 points.
Ahly have no major injury worries apart from that of influential winger Ramadan Sobhi, who is yet to fully recover from a hamstring complaint.
