Ahly’s march towards a fifth consecutive Egyptian Premier League title is overshadowed by some off-field controversies, on top of which is Ramadan Sobhi’s sudden refusal to join his boyhood club permanently.

The runaway leaders face lowly Aswan on Monday on the back of some below-par displays of late as well as rare mutiny among senior and key footballers.

Ahly beat Enppi 2-0 on their first match after the league was resumed earlier this month but they also looked sluggish, with the absence of Sobhi and the 10-game suspension of fellow winger Mahmoud Kahraba depriving them of much-needed creativity upfront.

Winning the league looks a mere formality as Ahly enjoy a 15-point lead over Zamalek on top, but their form will raise alarm bells as the club gear up for the crucial African Champions League semi-final against Morocco’s Wydad next month.
