Tonight, Egypt will welcome South Sudan for their very first friendly match at the Cairo International Stadium. This encounter comes just a few days after Egypt’s victorious 2-1 performance against Guinea in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 qualifiers.
Coach Rui Vitoria will have to manage without some key players for the upcoming friendly match. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and the Ahly trio consisting of Mohamed El-Shennawy, Hamdi Fathy, and Mohamed Abdel-Moneim will be given a rest and won’t participate in the game.
Additionally, Omar Marmoush, who recently joined Eintracht Frankfurt and sustained a back injury during the Guinea game on Wednesday, has been excluded from the squad.
Furthermore, Nantes FC striker Mostafa Mohamed has also been granted a rest for this match.
The 53-year-old coach views this game as an opportunity to provide playing time to new players and assess their abilities in preparation for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During the pre-game press conference, Vitoria emphasized that the friendly match against South Sudan presents an opportunity to uncover fresh talents within the team.
This upcoming Sunday’s friendly will serve as the inaugural encounter between the two national teams, following South Sudan’s independence from the north in July 2011.
Egypt has secured their spot in the AFCON 2023 finals by leading Group D of the qualifiers with 12 points, whereas South Sudan is currently struggling at the bottom of Group G with three points.
