Ahly kicked off their CAF Champions League journey with a dominant 3-0 victory over Gor Mahia FC at Nyayo National Stadium in Kenya on Sunday. This impressive win came in the first leg of the second preliminary round.
Veteran defender Rami Rabia set the tone early, finding the net just 14 minutes in with a perfectly timed header from a Hussein El-Shahat cross. Moments later, South Africa’s Percy Tau pounced on a defensive blunder to double Ahly’s advantage.
Tau then wrapped up the win with a clinical finish in the 74th minute. Even away from home, Ahly were in control, creating numerous chances that could have extended their lead further. They’ll head into the second leg in Cairo next week with a strong position.
The reigning champions are on a mission to secure their 12th CAF Champions League title this season. Coach Marcel Koller stuck with his trusted lineup, making only one change by bringing in newly signed Moroccan left-back Yahia Attiyat Allah.
This summer, Ahly bolstered their squad with key additions, including Youssef Ayman, Omar El-Saaiy, Yahia Attiyat Allah, and Achraf Dari.
Gor Mahia FC earned their spot in the round of 32 with a dominant 6-2 aggregate win over South Sudan’s Al-Merreikh.
The return leg of this thrilling clash is set for Saturday in Cairo.
