With a legacy of fierce competition, this rivalry is one of Africa’s most heated, and fans across the continent will be glued to the action as these two titans battle it out on the grand stage. Expect drama, passion, and non-stop action as Al Ahly and Zamalek go head-to-head for continental glory!
The entire city has been on edge for over a week, and with nearly 120 million Egyptians—and millions more across the region—locked in, this is a spectacle no one will want to miss.
“This isn’t just another trophy; it’s one of Africa’s biggest prizes, and it’s a battle between two arch-rivals steeped in African football history,” Zamalek winger Ahmed “Zizo” El Sayed told Cafonline. “We’re determined to deliver a top-tier match that showcases the best of Egyptian football.”
The stage is set for another showdown between two of Africa’s football giants, as Al Ahly and Zamalek meet once again in the Super Cup final. It’s a rematch over three decades in the making, since Ayman Mansour’s stunning 86th-minute strike from 25 yards secured Zamalek’s 1-0 victory in the 1994 final in Johannesburg—a game hailed as the “African Game of the Century.” That win marked Zamalek’s first of four titles, and ever since, Ahly fans have been craving ‘revenge,’ as the Super Cup remains the one competition where Zamalek hold the upper hand in their head-to-head record.
“I remember the massive pressure we felt back then. It was our first African final against each other,” said former Ahly and Egypt defender Mahmoud Abou Al-Dahab during a radio interview. “I don’t like the word revenge—there’s no such thing in football. With Ahly in strong form, the fans have high hopes, but the players need to stay humble and fight for every ball because during those 90 minutes, nothing else matters.”
On paper, Al Ahly come in as the favorites, having dominated both domestically and across Africa in recent years. The Red Devils have clinched back-to-back league titles and captured four of the last five CAF Champions League trophies. With a record eight Super Cup titles, they’ve also bolstered their squad, bringing in Moroccan internationals Achraf Dari and Yahia Attiat Allah, along with defender Ayman Youssef and midfielder Omar El-Saayi.
Zamalek, despite battling financial challenges, have still managed to strengthen their team. They’ve added defenders Mohamed Hamdi and Algerian Mahmoud Bentayg, alongside forwards Omar Faraj and Poland’s Konrad Michalak, hoping to make a statement on the big stage.
