Smouha FC reach Champions League last 16

Smouha, who finished as runners-up in the Egyptian Premier League last season after proving to be the competition’s Dark Horses, overturned a 1-0 first-leg loss in Nigeria to go through 2-1 on aggregate.

The match looked as though it was heading Enyimba’s way but striker El-Egeizi converted a penalty 10 minutes from time before Ivorian striker Kouao notched the precious winner in stoppage time.

Enyimba felt hard done by after protesting against several refereeing decisions. They also had midfielder Sokari Kingsley sent off on 70 minutes.

“It must be said though that the referee has been anything but objective in this game. Every call has gone Smouha’s way from the very start,” two-time African champions Enyimba said on their official Twitter account.

Smouha will face Congolese side Leopards in the round of 16.
