Ahly could well be officially crowned Egyptian league champions for the 40th time in their history in the next couple of days as they face fifth-placed Enppi at Cairo’s Petrosport Stadium on Sunday.
A win for Ahly coupled with a Masry defeat or a draw with El-Entag El-Harby the following day would mean the Cairo giants have won their third consecutive league title.
Hossam El-Badry’s men only need four points from their remaining league fixtures, and should Masry drop points against Entag on Monday, Ahly – 19 points clear of second-placed Ismaily – would formally win the league.
With fourth-placed Masry having two games in hand, the Port-Said side have more points to amass from upcoming league games, meaning that stuttering in their forthcoming fixtures would perfectly play into the hands of Ahly.
Ahly could still win the title this week should they draw with Enppi, provided that Masry lose to Entag and Ismaily drop points against Petrojet on Thursday.
A loss for the Reds, however, would mean that they would need to wait till they formally become league champions.
