TP Mazembe trash Zamalek SC 3-ZERO | CAF Champions League

It was a day to forget under-fire Milutin Sredojevic and Zamalek, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to TP Mazembe in their opening CAF Champions League group stage clash on Saturday afternoon.

Mazembe lined-up with Jackson Muleka upfront along with Tresor Mputu as the visitors had Shikabala on the bench in favour of Mostafa Mohamed and Achraf Bencharki in front.

A titanic affair in which the two sides had won the continent’s biggest crown five times apiece set tongues wagging across Lubumbashi and Cairo alike.

Sredojevic was required to make an early change as Mahmoud El-Wensh went off for Mohamed Abdel-Ghany 28 minutes into the match.

The White Knights, who succumbed to a narrow defeat the last time the two met in the group stages in 2014, made a bright start but the hosts finished the half the strongest.

An inspired substitution from Mihayo Kazembe signalled the end for Chico Ushindi on 57 minutes with fellow winger Mulota Kabangu entering the equation.

Three minutes later, Mazembe opened the deadlock when Muleka combined with Kabangu’s cross to head home after the defence went to sleep.

Another piece of woeful defending from Zamalek six minutes later allowed Mputu to profit with Kabangu the main provider yet again.

Zamalek failed to launch any sort of response, while Kabangu sent in a free-kick in the final eight minutes which Muleka latched onto for his brace as the home side ran out 3-0 winners on the day.
