Egypt lost to Senegal with two first-half goals in Dakar, scored by Premier League duo Mame Diouf and Sadio Mane.
The opening defeat leaves Egypt bottom of Group G, with Tunisia and Botswana playing on Saturday in Monastir.
Egypt coach Shawki Gharib was forced to play with a new-look team compared to the side that featured in the most previous competitive game against Ghana last year.
Khaled Kamar, Shawki Al-Saied, Ali Ghazal and Ahmed Hassan ‘Koka’ made their competitive debuts while Ahmed Fathi played at left back.
