Sam Morsy named Community Champion for the 2019/20 campaign

Wigan Athletic captain Samy Morsy has today been named the club’s PFA Community Champion for his outstanding contribution to Wigan Athletic Community Trust during the 2019/20 campaign.

The award aims to raise awareness of the great support that players provide to their club’s community activities during the season.

Morsy was nominated for the award for showing his support to a number of Community Trust initiatives over the season including his participation in free football sessions for youngsters from Wigan Mosque.

Earlier in the campaign, he also met youngsters at a Fit and Fed session, a programme that offers youngsters free physical exercise and a free meal during the school holidays.

After receiving his award, Morsy said: “I have really enjoyed being involved with the Community Trust this season and I am extremely proud and honoured to have received this award.

“We absolutely recognise the important role we as players can play in Wigan, in terms of connecting with our supporters and local people.

“The Trust’s staff are always very welcoming and have a genuine passion for their work, which really rubs off on the participants and equally us as players when we attend the events.”

Latics’ players at all levels have made regular appearances and contributions to the Trust throughout the season and during lockdown, from attending disability football sessions to taking part in virtual Premier League Primary Stars lessons.

Tom Flower, Head of Community at Wigan Athletic, said: “Samy has been an excellent ambassador for Wigan Athletic and a wonderful support to the Community Trust throughout the season.

“I’d like to personally thank him and all of the club’s players for their efforts including during lockdown, as they have continued to have an impact and leave lasting impressions on our participants.”
