Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the former left-back represented the country of his birth on six occasions as a player

At club level, he had a much better career as a player, winning four trophies for Boca Juniors between 1993 to 2000, including the Copa Libertadores.

He then went to represent La Liga outfit Villarreal for seven years until 2007, as well as having stints AEK Athens, Tigre, and Universidad Católica, retiring at the latter in 2010.

Arruabarrena didn’t wait long to get into the managerial career, taking the helm of Club Atlético Tigre of Argentina one year after hanging up his boots.

He then went on to coach Uruguayan giants Club Nacional, before returning back to Boca Juniors in 2014, guiding them to the domestic double in 2015.

The 45-year-old then moved to the Gulf area, managing Emirati sides Al Wasl and Shabab Al Ahli, and Al Rayyan of Qatar.
