Will Mido Pass his first test with Zamalek?

All eyes will be on Zamalek’s new coach, Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam’, who will have his first-ever coaching experience against Minya on Wednesday.

Former Tottenham striker Mido has been appointed manager of his hometown club Zamalek, becoming the youngest head coach in Egyptian top-flight history.

Mido, who turns 31 next month, has no previous coaching experience.

He succeeds Helmi Toulan, who was sacked after the team’s 1-1 draw with Haras El-Hodoud 1-1 in the league.

Mido enjoyed a fine playing career, representing the likes of Ajax Amsterdam and Spurs, while he scored 19 goals in 51 appearances for the Pharaohs.

“For those who criticise my appointment because of my age, it is normal in Europe and I am ready for the challenge, especially as I was always a leader on the pitch as a player,” Hossam told Zamalek’s official website.

Zamalek’s newly-signed Omar Gamal is the only player who will miss the game, out with a cold.

Minya, who lie at the bottom of the league table with three points, are looking to improve their position.

It will be tough against the Cup winner and their enthusiastic coach, but Minya can still dream for a surprise.
