The Egyptian Football Association said on Wednesday national team coach Shawky Gharib will remain in his position even if the team fail to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations.
The Pharaohs risk missing out on the biennial tournament for the third straight time as they could only collect six points from four games, having lost to Senegal and Tunisia before claiming two successive wins over Botswana.
They are third in Group G with six points, one behind Senegal and four adrift of Tunisia with two games to spare. The top two automatically qualify for the Nations Cup.
Although Gharib previously said he would leave should Egypt miss out on the tournament again, EFA vice-chairman Hassan Farid has given him a vote of confidence.
