Zamalek came from behind to claim a large 5-1 over Ittihad El-Shorta and edge closer on the Egyptian League title for the first time since 2004.
The League leaders were stunned by Ahmed Gomaa’s rocketing strike from inside the area in the 22nd minute.
The Whites responded quickly as Bassem Morsi converted a penalty 10 minutes after midfielder Ahmed Tawfiq was brought down in the area.
It could only get worse for Ittihad El-Shorta as defender Khaled Sotouhi was sent off in the 35th minute for a harsh tackle on Tawfiq.
Just before the break Ibrahim Salah met a fine cross by hamada Toba with a powerful header to give his side a 2-1 first-half lead.
Substitute Khaled Qamar made it 3-1 after picking a blunder by El-Shorta defender in front of an empty goal in the 48th minute.
Burkinabe defender Mohamed Koffi, after seing a first attempt crash off the post, added the fourth with a diving header to opened his scoring account this season in the 82nd minute.
Qamar, who switched from El-Shorta to Zamalek last summer, added to his former team’s misery by completing his double deep in injury time.
Following to Thursday’s victory the White Knights cemented their position on the top of the League table with 69 points, eight ahead of second-placed ENPPI who played four more games.
