Ittihad of Alexandria deployed a high-intensity match that served them well in the opening stages of the game, preventing Ahly from their trademark possession game.
The hosts had to wait for 16 minutes to create the first real threat on goal.
Taher won the ball in his own half, made a darting run into Ittihad’s area to send Kahraba clear on goal to put Ahly in the lead with a low shot at the far post.
Hossam Hassan’s men maintained their pressing game but were exposed by Ahly’s front three, who have the speed and skill to exploit their high backline.
Mohamed Sherif, Kahraba and Taher were very dangerous on counters but lacked the final touch to increase the hosts’ lead.
Ittihad came close to leveling the score just after the break with a brilliant volley from Ivorian winger Razack Cisse, only to be denied by a superb save from international keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi.
Ahly showed immediate reaction as Tunisian left back Ali Maaloul set up substitute Hussein El-Shahat in the area to brilliantly skip the last defender and fire at the top corner to double his team’s lead.
Sherif made it 3-0 at the hour mark when he latched onto a through ball from El-Shahat to strike home from close range.
Tireless central midfielder Tawfik was rewarded for his effort when he found the net from close range to grab his first half of the season.
Second half substitutes Salah Mohsen, Marwan Mohsen and Walid Soliman squandered some easy chances to get on the score sheet and grab a record victory tonight.
